Many bikers (that's the bicycle, peddle power ones - not the engine powered ones!) train on our streets. Over the last couple of months we have had one seriously injured and one death just close to our office. 

In the case of death, the car driver was not at fault. However sorry we are for the people involved, we need to keep a sensible head on and look at the legal side.

In this particular case, the rider of the bicycle was here on holiday and the car owner was a local resident. Her car was a complete write off and the holiday maker may or may not have had bike insurance / public liability. 

Without any insurance, the car owner may have to sue, through the courts, the biker's family... or he may not have even had any family. Where does that leave the car owner? Especially if she only had third party insurance cover. 

So the moral of this story is, before you take a bike out on to public roads, please make sure you are fully insured.
